New York, June 28, 2007—There is no doubt that Chief Gani Fawehinmi, Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and Senior Advocate of the Masses (SAM) is a great man.

Having unquestionably understood that, let’s also make the point that great men no matter how we expect them to be perfect are still human therefore subject to errors, sometimes very embarrassing errors, too.

Chief Gani Fawehinmi
Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN)
Senior Advocate of the Masses (SAM)

Chief Gani Fawehinmi’s records of remarkable feats are probably too voluminous for a short discuss such as this.

Most notably referred to as 'conscience of the nation' by Nigerians, Gani was fearless as he shred most gruesome dictators Nigeria ever had - Army Generals Ibrahim Babangida and Sani Abacha to pieces with his criticisms, civil rights campaign and pro-democracy activisms.

The legendary legal luminary, Chief Fawehinmi suffered harassments, illegal arrests and detention and spent some time in some of the worst and dreaded penitentiaries in Nigeria.

Activist Gani was not afraid to sue the dictators when most people were too scared to breadth heavy, not to mention the guts to look up.

Chief Fawehinmi is also a renowned philanthropist. Few in Nigeria could match his record of giving to the less privileged and other charity causes.

Chief Fawehinmi is also an outstanding and accomplished publisher on legal matters.

That our Gani is a good fighter that no seasoned fighter wants to mess with or fight is not an exaggeration, but a fight we will not like to see is our beloved Gani (SAN) Versus our highly respected pro-democracy guru, Olisa Agbakoba (SAN).

Speaking politically-partisan, beloved Gani founded the National Conscience Party to try to wrestle power from the killers of Nigerian dreams (America, take a back seat, here comes Nigeria). Our dear Gani probably found out that politics Nigeriana and law are world apart, so to say. NCP as a political movement probably exists only in the hearts and minds of Gani-ists (Gani’s followers and lovers) and they are probably the silent majority too scared or hungry to follow their icon in view of carrots and bread inducements from the ruling parties.

With all due respect to our beloved Gani; we first noticed some strange signs sometime ago when he charged that he “will make Nigeria ungovernable” if his party was not registered to run and win elections.

We are currently deeply troubled when Gani used the appointment of Mike Okiro to the office of Inspector General of Police to raise questions about marginalization of the Igbos, insinuation an attempt to divide the Igbo nation, by questioning the genuineness of police Chief. We are troubled particularly by this action because Mike Mbama Okiro is clearly an Igboman. However, we are convinced that our Gani does not mean any harm.

We are compelled and again, with all due respect, to school the public (not the learned legal luminary Gani) that Igbos are found in Delta State, Rivers state, Cross River State, Akwa Ibom State, Benue State and other parts of Nigeria and other parts of the world that humans exist and that none is more genuine that another. The Igbo nation is one very large family.

Gani’s recent statements against the Supreme Court ruling returning Governor Peter Obi to Governor’s Office of Anambra State and sacking of illegally installed Andy Uba is most embarrassing to those of us that admire Gani a lot and read him every time he speaks.

Having said that, however, the question is; do the masses loose respect for our Gani? The answer is; Emphatic No!

Just to shut up Gani’s few critics celebrating his few gaffes, let’s make it abundantly and loudly clear that Gani is only human, Gani is not senile, Gani’s glorious days are not over yet, Gani is not loosing it and there is no law of mental diminishing return happening here.

Let’s just say that Gani mis-spoke; or blame it on the press if you will for misquoting him and let’s move on.

Enough of all those Gani-bashing. Nigerian masses still need ‘undiluted’ Gani, please.
